DSG's are great if you are feeling lazy, much faster and very involving, controllable, and fun if you take the time to learn how to actually properly use it in full manual mode.
Every gear-change up or down is when I say so and it massively adds to the control and involvement. By now my preference for manual should be well-known in these parts, but I agree you should hold out for DSG if that's your preference.
I'd stop short of claiming the car itself is better. The R is quite capable of pleasing manual fans. Clutches seem to be golf r manual vs dsg weak point, especially if you mod the engine. At 22K miles I haven't encountered problems with my stock set-up and will be disappointed if I do in the future.
But a slipping clutch can be replaced with a heavy-duty aftermarket unit and life goes on. If you want DSG, hold out for it. Very very few there are some regret moving to DSG.
And as Splats says, invest in a good set of replacement paddle shifters for max manual experience. Ive had a manual for 3 years - light clutch and gearbox and golf r manual vs dsg a chore to drive in traffic but can definitely relate to the weak clutch comments. As a first time auto box DSG owner with DCCI can add that while I sometimes miss the clutch and rowing through the gears, if you have a congested daily drive, there is no going back.
